[The combination of feeling like he's having his turn of phrase mocked, and the idea that she or anybody else living in a civilised country just doesn't know what he was afraid of during a time period still within living memory, is enough that he doesn't bother replying.]
[She assumes he just doesn't feel like talking about the flood, so she's content to leave it at that. His book will appear in front of his cabin door in a few hours, though.]
